Here is this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada, Northern California and the Sierra. This report is for the week of April 24. Opening Day for most stream and lake fishing in California is Saturday.

ALMANOR LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:

Water conditions are spring-perfect! Temperature and clarity are absolutely great and the fish know that too, as they all want to catch the fresh hatches happening right now.
Reports indicate the best concentration of trout is along the east shore.
Head over early in the morning, as the fish will drop down several feet as the sun gets higher.

ALMANOR LAKE, CALIF:
To be planted the week of April 28 by the Calif. Dept. of Fish & Wildlife.

BOCA RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
Boca is filling up and fishing here has been pretty good.
Best action by shore fisherman has been the dam and at the deeper troughs outside the inlet.
Lake is at its winter level so boaters are launching from the east side of the lake. Those who are able to launch should concentrate their efforts about 50-70 off the dam with kokanee (yes, kokanee) imitations as this is what the large browns are feeding on.
Also, concentrate off points as large fish will be suspended here.
Shore fisherman can be successful by throwing all sorts of bait and lures such as large spinners and small stick baits that will imitate kokanee, rainbows, or baitfish.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Opens for the 2013 fishing season on Saturday, April 27.

CARSON RIVER, WEST, CALIF:
Opens for the 2013 fishing season on Saturday, April 27.

Opening day fishing should be very productive.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
Kent Rianda of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Opens for the 2013 fishing season on Saturday, April 27.

DAVIS LAKE, CALIF:
Jim and Jeanne of the J & J Grizzly Store (530-832-0270) (www.grizzlystore.portola-ca.com) report:
April 17:
The current lake level is at 82%.
Over the last weekend, we talked with several fly fishermen. They reported that fishing was GREAT at Coot's Bay and Mosquito. They would not share all of their secrets on what they were using; however, they bought ice cream cone flies and Wooly Buggers.

DAVIS LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
May until the end of July is the best time to be fishing on Lake Davis.
This is when the damsel fly hatch begins, bring large rainbows into the shallows and surface.
The fishing can be nerve-racking, many large rainbows splashing, water containing thousands of migrating nymphs at times. You only hope they take your imitation along with the other "real" food.
Use nightcrawlers dressed with Berkley’s garlic-flavored trout dip.
The average fish reported has been around 17 inches in length.
Courtesy of Fly Fish with Don.

DONNER LAKE, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
With moderate high temps in the 60's this week and this lakes close proximity to town it's the perfect cure if you need to get out and wet a line.
The west end of the lake by the boat launch or off the beach has been great for some planters using nightcrawlers, eggs, or power bait and small lures.
Patience is needed but when the big schools of rainbows come thru the action can be awesome.
Some that are fly fishing using jig head flies have been doing well!
If your fishing for Macks throw countdown rapalas or large spoons. Boats can be launched here and the Mack fishing has been pretty good! Trolling and jigging has been successful at depths from 55-75 feet with most Macks ranging in the teens. Some smaller Macks are at depths above this and can be caught even by the shore fishermen along the deeper drop-offs.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR, LINCOLN COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
The action has been excellent this past week with most anglers limiting out within a few hours from both boats and the shore. Most fish are in the 12- to 15-inch range. Red and white spinning lures and silver spoons have been particularly productive.
The campground facilities and the fish cleaning station are scheduled to be open by April 22.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR, LINCOLN COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Rainbow trout have been cooperative and biting well on Rapala fish imitations or night crawlers.
Largemouth bass are also showing up in creels, though most have been the smaller size classes.

FALL RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Opens for the 2013 fishing season on Saturday, April 27.

FEATHER RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Conditions staying steady as Stripers are scattered all up and down the river, making consistent catches difficult. Most fishermen have been doing well with cut bait, drifting minnows, and pile worms.
Slow and stealth is advised due to possible disruptive boat traffic.
Courtesy of Johnsons Bait & Tackle. & FishKevinBrock.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Wiggin’s Trading Post at Chilcoot (530-993-4683) reports:
Fishing at Frenchman Lake continues to be great and everybody is getting excited about the stream opener this Saturday, April 27th.
Larry Ayers, his son and his dad fished Turkey Point and Nightcrawler Bay on April 17th and limited out using inflated worms and green power bait.
The fish ranged in size from 18 to 25 inches.
Bob Parry, John Cooper and Mike Hancho were fishing the shallows April 19th and caught 15 rainbows using blue power bait.
Their fish measured between 18 and 22 inches each.
Mitch, a regular fisherman at Frenchman Lake caught 4 beautiful rainbows - 2 ½ pounds each, off the dam using worms.
Chilcoot, Frenchman and Spring Creek Campgrounds are now open, so come up and get your spot.
Stop in to see us on your way up to the lake or give us a call for current conditions and updates at (530) 993-4683.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Consistent reports have been coming out of the lake, with virtually all fishermen reporting they have caught multiple rainbows in quick succession.
The stream openers on the 27th means conditions will improve even more, but one should expect increased activity due to campgrounds being opened.
Courtesy of The Wiggins Trading Post.

HOBART RESERVOIR, WASHOE COUNTY, NEV:
Closed until May 01, 2013.

HOT CREEK, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Water flow is 11 CFS. Spring is here and the fish are hungry.
Look for the BWO's and when the fish are low, try WD-40's, small P.T.'s and green rock worms.
Very crowded of late

JIGGS / ZUNINO RESERVOIR, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Unfortunately, Jiggs has dried up.

KLAMATH RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Nothing new has changed from last week, expect changes in May or June.
Most fishermen agree that it is too late in the season for the Klamath to be a good choice. The steelheads have dwindled and will return en masse next autumn. However, if one is inclined to fish on the Klamath the weather is fantastic and the spring air refreshing.

LAUGHTON, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Colorado River:
The striper bait is slow but rainbow trout are providing anglers with good action. A pair of anglers recently checked in with bows pushing past the four-pound threshold. Trout are biting in the Davis Camp area, along Casino Row and near Rotary Park.

LEWISTON LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Conditions have remained relatively the same as hatches continue, especially in the early morning. Conditions will most likely improve as summer goes on, however, reports indicate the Rainbow here have not been large. Courtesy of The Fly Shop.

LUNDY LAKE, CALIF:

LAKE MEAD, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Anglers have been deterred by windy weather conditions this past week.
For those venturing out, fishing for smallmouth and largemouth bass has been good. Anglers have found success with crankbaits or plastic worms.
The Nevada Striper Club had their monthly tournament last weekend and members found the area between Gypsum and Government Wash to be a prime spot. Cut anchovies and 1/16-ounce jig heads produced fish.
Drop the line to the bottom and bring it up.
Best fishing has been early in the morning and just after sunset.
Reminder to boaters:
In an effort to hinder the spread of HYPERLINK "http://www.ndow.org/Boat/Aquatic_Invasive_Species/" \o "aquatic invasive species" aquatic invasive species (AIS), as of Jan. 1 all motorized and non-motorized vessels able to retain water are now required to obtain and display an AIS decal.
Details can be obtained from an NDOW office.

LAKE MOHAVE, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
High winds gusting to speeds of 68 miles an hour have kept many anglers away. Fishing for stocked rainbow trout at Willow Beach has been good. Smallmouth bass continue to provide anglers a good day on the water.

MONO COUNTY, CALIF:
Planted the week of April 21 by the Calif. Dept. of Fish & Wildlife:
Bridgeport Reservoir
Buckeye Creek
Convict Creek
Convict Lake
Grant Lake
Gull Lake

OREGON PACIFIC OCEAN AND BEACHES, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
The recreational Dungeness crabbing is open in the ocean.
Fishing for bottom fish including rockfish, and lingcod is now closed outside of the 30 fathom curve until Sept. 30.
The marine fish daily bag limit is seven fish and a separate daily limit for lingcod (two).
Retention of cabezon is not allowed until July 1 due to a small harvest cap.
Fishing for ling cod has been very good when the ocean has been calm.
Anglers are also having good success catching limits of black rockfish in the Coos Bay/Bandon area.
Recreational chinook salmon fishing is open in the ocean from Cape Falcon to Humbug Mt. from March 15 through April 30.
All chinook caught in the ocean must be 24 inches or longer.
A few chinook salmon were caught in the Coos Bay area last week.
Anglers are reporting that surfperch fishing is slow to decent depending on what beach you are fishing. Sand shrimp or sand worms are always great baits to use for surf perch fishing.
Surfperch fishing usually picks up in April and May.

ORVILLE LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Action remains steady at Lake Oroville for bass at around 30 feet using jigs, shaky head, dart head and drop shot worms.
There has been a wide open bite on 10-12 inch land-locked Coho Salmon on just about any offering with minnows is a good bet.
Courtesy of My Outdoor Buddy.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Upper Owens River:
Current flow is 109 CFS. Warming temps should pick up the bite here. Not much on the surface so nymphing with flash back hares ears, prince nymphs and bead head caddis pupa is the best bet.
Lower Owens River:
Water flow is currently 222 CFS. Fishing is good.
Caddis hatch is unpredictable. Red jujube midge, small Stevie's Wonders in black or grey and olive or grey WD-40's.
Baetis hatch midday but not much surface action.

PIT RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Fishing in the Pit has continued to be great so far! Weather and water conditions have been getting better, but overall the Rainbows have been hungry leading to great catches.
It advised to use a wading staff.
For better results use a #14-16 Pheasant Tail Nymph, as it has had consistent results on the river.
Courtesy of The Fly Shop.

PROSSER RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
Some good success reported in the Prosser Creek arm of the lake along with certain sections around the dam.
Use baits similar to what you would be using in other area lakes but when throwing lures step down a size or two as the trout here range from 12 to 18 inches and tend to shy away from big spinners and spoons.

SACRAMENTO RIVER (LOWER), CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
The river is currently running quickly but is expected to remain steady. The increase in river releases may sporadically decrease the river quality during spring, but the effect will not be too drastic.
Overall, the fishing should be consistent and great. However, wading on the river will be difficult if not impossible due to flow speed.
Courtesy of The Fly Shop.

SACRAMENTO RIVER (UPPER), CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
This portion of the river has been great so far as hatches continue and water conditions become even better.
Wading is possible and especially safe right now down near the Dunsmuir area, despite some high water levels.
A personal floatation device is advised.
Courtesy of The Fly Shop.

SAN JOAQUIN/RED’S MEADOW, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) ( HYPERLINK "http://www.performanceanglers.com"www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Road is closed.

SHASTA LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Fishing as, for the most part, been great! Best results are coming in from the Dry Creek area. Early morning fishing has been good as most salmon go to around 60 feet deep later in the day. Hummdingers and Wiggle Hoochies have been good at reaching the lower depth salmon.
Shoreline bass fishing has improved as well, and should improve even more as the weather warms even more.
Courtesy of Sacriver Guide.

SMITH RIVER, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
Steelhead are in the Smith River.
There is no hatchery program up the Smith River so the angling opportunity will primarily be catch-and-release of wild steelhead.
This is the time that anglers also target striped bass in the tide waters.
As the weather warms the bass should get more active in feeding as they prepare for spawning.

STAMPEDE RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
Boat launch is wide open.
Word is out here now and a lot of Macks are being caught as they are in full on feed mode. Fishing around the island has been the hot spot in 10-20 feet of water before first light. Also, off the dam in 10-20 feet of water has seen some action. As the light hits the water start fishing for the Macks around drop offs and then start looking for them later suspended in deeper water.
Kokanee fishing has started here, not red hot mind you, but look for them just outside the Little Truckee Arm, Sagehen Arm and the point around these two areas. Top lining in some really shallow water will bring results with a variety of Kokanee lures now. Get out early!
For the shore fisherman spoons, large Spinners, and stick baits will work and of course if you're throwing bait nothing beats an inflated nightcrawler drenched in your favorite scent.
Action here has been better for the boater, but recent reports have indicated that shore fishing has picked up.
Reports over past few weeks have some nice Smallies caught from shore!

LAKE TAHOE:
Rick and Tresa Kennedy of Tight Line Guide Service (888-975-0990) (www.fish tightlines.com) report:
Lake Tahoe Report for the Week of 4/15/13:
We are done with Sport Shows and now it's time to fish!
We were on Lake Tahoe a couple days this week.
We experienced the normal steady Mackinaw bite off Cal Neva Point.
We caught Mackinaw each day in 250 to 300 feet of water on Spoons.
The average size was 2 to 5 pounds.
#3 Green Needlefish and Sep’s Glow Green Secrets seemed to be the best lure for us this week, covered with Pautzke Krill.
We also spent some time on the Nevada side of Cal Neva point, Dollar Point and a little time down south. We caught Mackinaw in all three of these locations pulling Rapala’s.
We landed a couple nice rainbows off Dollar Point as well. Not big but very nice bright fish.

TRINITY LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
No current fishing report, however good news: March through June are the favorite months for experienced bass anglers there.
The lake has good populations of both largemouth and smallmouth bass.
It also holds the California record for small mouth bass!
A dredger piles at the head of the lake, as well as other structures found in the coves and points throughout the lake provide excellent bass fishing for most of the year. Spring always provides the hottest action, as both species move into the shoreline to spawn.
Courtesy of Fish Trinity Lake.

TRINITY RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
River flows have increased dramatically, making fishing on the river extremely difficult if not impossible in some areas. The water level combined with the speed also makes wading a dangerous option.
Overall, the Trinity River is not a good choice at the moment.
Courtesy of The Fly Shop.

TRUCKEE RIVER, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
California:
Remember that this Saturday all tribs and the section above Trout Creek open if you're getting tired of fishing the same areas.
Remember that Tribs around Tahoe don't open until July 1st!
This time of year look for those overcast days with little or no wind as they will spurn some good BWO and Midge hatches and will bring fish to the surface. Besides those days, expect nymphing to bring the best results.
Best times are 8 to 6 now.
From Glenshire down to the Boca outflow one might find more dry activity and one should note that March Browns are active now and one should have patterns that will represent them now.
With cold water temps you'll need repeated drifts to coax fish now to accept your offerings. Nymphing will consist of large primary flies such as Pat's Rubberlegs, Buggers, large Copper Johns(reds!), Prince Nymphs, and stone imitations trailed behind 16-18 inches with small BWO, Baetis, and Midge imitations in sizes 16 to 20.
Don't overlook streamers as some nice fish are still being taken this way and with water temps inching towards the mid 40's fish are more apt to chase your offerings. Sculpin imitations have been the best. Soft hackle imitations in BWO patterns work well when fish are feeding just under the surface.
Nevada:
If the California side of the Truckee is getting you flustered maybe a trip to the Nevada side will turn your luck around.
Try the Mogul area, Downtown (not for the faint of heart), or further east past Sparks as one should find some willing participants to grab your offerings. There have been some prolific hatches of BWO's in these stretches of the river.
Study the water and turn rocks and see what is going on, also seine for what is in the drift. Little things like this and slowing your approach to the river’s edge will greatly increase your chances of being successful.
Again, make sure your box is stocked with every conceivable stage of bugs that are present now!

Launching is not possible right now.

WALKER RIVER, EAST, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) ( HYPERLINK "http://www.kenssport.com"www.kenssport.com) reports:
East Walker River:
April 21 , 2013
The flows on the East fluctuated a bit this week, today it's back down to 31 CFS. The fishing has still been pretty good though with this lower flow lots of fish will probably have moved back into the deeper holes. nymphing with small midge patterns has been the most productive but we have had some good reports on dries as well as streamers.
Flashback emergers, zebra midges, silver streaks, rainbow warriors, top secret midges and copper johns have all been doing well, below the bridge you can go with a dry/dropper rig with a skwalla or chubby chernobyl on top and a small midge below.
On the Nevada side they've still been hitting poxyback stones and rubber leg stones as well as the midges.
Sceirine Ranch:
April 21, 2013
The Sceirine has been fishing very well this week, they're still taking stonefly nymphs as well as stonefly patterns on top. Small midge patterns are also doing well. Haven't heard any news on streamers from the ranch but a zuddler or moal leech would also probably do the trick.
Hunewill Pond:
April 21, 2013
The pond is fishing excellent this week, stillwater nymphs, seal buggers, goat leeches stripped slowly have been doing good, also a dry/dropper rig with a stimulator or parachute adams on top and a rojo midge or flashback emerger dropped about 6 or 8 inches has been excellent.

WALKER RIVER, EAST, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Water flow has been up and down and is currently 32 CFS.
Fishing is very tough.

WALKER RIVER, WEST, CALIF:
Opens for the 2013 fishing season on Saturday, April 27.

WASHOE LAKE, WAHOE COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Washoe Lake dried up in 2004 and, although it is presently full and has been restocked, the fish population, consisting mostly of channel catfish and white bass, is small. Fishing is expected to be poor.

WILLOW BEACH, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Anglers are finding good action for large stripers. The fish are biting A.C. Plugs and other trout-imitating swimbaits. Three fish weighing in at 16.16 pounds, 17 pounds and 27.76 pounds came in during the past week. Rainbow trout continue to hit small spinners and other traditional trout baits following the weekly plants on Fridays.

WHISKEYTOWN LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
The fishing conditions has been improving, producing Kokes around twelve inches, meaning that during the summer months they should be between 14” and 15”. Expect more reports as the summer months continue.
