The kids are finishing their first week of school, but the summer hasn’t quit just yet. The annual Jazz and Beyond Festival is heading into its final weekend, and as always, going out in style. Tonight, celebrate Count Basie’s 111th birthday with the Mile High Jazz Band downtown on Third Street. Carson Tahoe Medical Center is holding its 5th annual HopeFest concert headlined by the Young Dubliners. Carson's own, Molly Seals, will be performing, as well.

FRIDAY: Jazz and Beyond

  • Back to School at Carson Hot Springs (Free 17 and younger admission per paid adult; outdoor pools only; 7am-10pm)
  • ‘Wally’s World: The Loneliest Art Collection in Nevada’ in the OXS Gallery at the Nevada Arts Council: 716 N. Carson St. (8am-5pm)
  • Industrial Art at the CCAI Gallery in the Courthouse: 885 E. Musser (8am-5pm)
  • CCAI Exhibit: BRIC Art 5 at the BRIC: 108 E. Proctor St. (8am-12pm and 1pm-5pm)
  • NAA Exhibit by artist Val Dutter at the Carson Visitor Center (8am-5pm)
  • Quicksilver Agility Club’s Dog Agility Trials at Fuji Park
  • Bowling Special: $1 per person per game at Carson Lanes (9am-4pm)
  • Carson City Mint Coin Show and Fair with Demonstrations of Coin Press #1 at the Nevada State Museum and Carson Nugget (9:30am-4:30pm; $4, under 17 free)
  • Virginia and Truckee Round-trip Steam Train Ride: leave from Carson City Eastgate Depot on Flint Drive, off U.S. Highway 50 East at 10am and Depart Virginia City Depot at 3pm (tickets limited, $52, seniors and veterans $48, kids 3-16 $32, arrive 30 minutes early)
  • Kids Ride Free Friday on the Virginia and Truckee Steam Train (code kidsfree online ONLY on www.vtrailway.com; one kids ticket with the purchase each adult ticket; ages 3-16)
  • Photography Art Show at the Nevada Artists Association Gallery in the Brewery Arts Center (10am-4pm)
  • Women Only Golf Social at Silver Oak Golf Course (4:30pm-5:30pm; $25 includes 9-holes, instruction, range balls, and more)
  • 5th Annual HopeFest featuring Live Music by Young Dubliners at the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center: 1535 Medical Parkway (5pm-8pm; food trucks, raffle, and more; bring a lawn chair)
  • Magic, the Gathering at Nerdvana: 385 Hot Springs Road, Suite 1 (5:30pm-6pm sign up; 6pm start)
  • Jazz and Beyond: Live Music with Impromptu on the Third Street Stage (5:30pm-7pm; free)
  • Fundraiser for Pinkerton Ballet Theatre’s Nutcracker at the Carson City Yogurt Beach (6pm-10pm; must mention ‘Pinkerton’ ‘Ballet’ or ‘Nutcracker’ for 20% of proceeds to be donated)
  • Live Music at San Marcos Grill
  • Carson City BMX: Friday Night Lights at the Livermore (Edmonds) Sports Complex (Sign ups 6:30pm-7:30pm; $5)

Canines, coins, and comedy have hit the valley. Head to the Nevada State Museum for the annual coin show and fair. You’ll hear lectures about the history of our historic mint, see a demonstration of Coin Press #1, and more. Quicksilver Dog Agility Trials are at Fuji Park all weekend where you can witness some talented pooches run obstacle courses. The Carson Nugget is where you’ll find master impressionist, Tony D’Andrea. A different funnyman performs each Friday at Carson Comedy.

  • World Dance Open Floor in Comma Coffee Courtyard (sign-up 7pm; mini concert by STRAZZ at 7:30pm, dancing at 8:15pm; free, open to all dance styles; dancing for donations for Strings in the Schools)
  • Jazz and Beyond: Live Music with Carson City Symphony’s STRAZZ ensemble in the Comma Coffee Courtyard (7:30pm-8pm; free)
  • Live Music: Trey Stone with John Shipley and Danny Jones at Flight: 2244 Meridian, off Airport in Minden (7:30pm-11:30pm)
