I Love Carson City’s Weekend Event Summary: Feb. 6-7

Okay all you procrastinators, if you planned on making it to the Arlington Square Ice Rink, then today is your last chance. With a temperature around 50, it should be a perfect day to skate one last time. Show some Senator Pride tonight at the Community Center as 24 seniors compete for ‘Mr. Carson High.’ There’s a lot going on this weekend, so take a look at the list and go have some fun.

SATURDAY:

  • Free Basketball Handling Clinic for Kids at the Multi-Purpose Athletic Center (MAC): 1870 Russell Way (7:30am-8:30am; sponsored by the Boys and Girls Club)
  • Sixth Annual Carson High School Safe Grad 5k Run/Walk at the Carson High School track (race 10am-12:30pm; same day registration begins at 8:30am, $35, $25 for those 18 and younger; raffle tickets available - $5 each or 5 for $20)
  • Women's Self Defense Seminar at No Limits Martial Arts (formerly, Carson ATA): 3242 Research Way (8:30am; $10, proceeds going to Advocates to End Domestic Violence; Call 775-883-5425 for more information or to register)
  • Love Can Be Cold 5 or 10K: 7th Annual Be Bold, Run in the Cold Winter Trail Series presented by Ascent Runs- begins at Prison Hill, west side of the water tank. Trailhead at Koontz and Edmonds; look for blue truck and pop-ups (race begins 9am; registration $25, students $15 - cash or card only; All runners, whether pre-registered or not, must check in race morning; Walkers are welcome)

Everyone can enjoy the great outdoors today. The more experienced runners will want to head to Prison Hill for the Love Can Be Cold 5 or 10K. Help raise money for the Class of ’16 Safe Grad at Carson High: their 5K will be on flat ground. A short half mile hike at Dayton State Park will include a lesson on the local wildlife.

  • Little League Registration at the Indoor Facility at Governor’s Field (8am-12pm; open to ages 4-18 as of Aug. 31, 2016 who live in Carson or attend Carson schools; bring original birth certificates and proof of residency)
  • Nevada Artists Association Art Exhibit featuring Bob Hickox and Photography by Chas. H. McDonnell, III at the Carson Visitor Center (8am-5pm)
  • Coffee and Donuts with EAA Sierra Chapter 403 at 2500 E. College Pkwy (8:30am-12pm, all welcome)
  • Carson Girls Softball Sign-ups at the MAC Building: 1860 Russell Way (9am-1pm; open to ages 4.5 – 18 as of Jan. 1, 2016; $75, with a discounted price for additional siblings)
  • Soroptimists’ Valentine Tag, Craft, and Bake Sale at the Dayton Community Center: Pike St., Dayton (9am-3pm)
  • Valentine Vendors at the Carson Mall (10am-5pm)
  • Ladies Day at Greenhouse Garden Center: 2450 S. Curry St. (classes run 10am-3pm; $20, reservations required 775-882-8600; refreshments provided by Artisan Café)

  • New Year’s Art Show at the Nevada Artists Association Gallery in the Brewery Arts Center (10am-4pm)

  • Family Day; Meet the Young Chautauquans at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center: 1477 Hwy 395, Gardnerville (10am-2pm; free admission)
  • Monthly meeting of F.E.A.T. (Families for Effective Autism Treatment) in the back room at Comma Coffee (10:30am)
  • Swim Class for Kids with Autism Spectrum Disorder at the Carson City Aquatic Facility (11am; $4)
  • WARF Cat and Kitten Adoption Event at Petco on Topsy Lane (11am-4pm; all cats are fixed, vaccinated and micro-chipped)
  • Tailgate Party at the Carson Valley Inn Casino, Minden (11am-4pm; live music, giveaways, and more)
  • Downtown Business Association's Wine Walk: sign up at Bella Fiore Wines, the Carson Nugget, Cactus Jacks, Carson Jewelry and Loan, Remedy's Bar, or Touched By Angels (1pm-5pm; $15)

Get your wine walk on today. Enjoy live music at the Brewery Arts Center and Comma Coffee. The Carson Hot Springs will have a raffle for free passes at the Carson Visitor Center. Meet and greet some great photographers at the Nevada Day Store. And don’t forget your sweetheart as you wander around our great downtown shops.

  • Love on a Leash: read to a therapy dog and receive a free book at the Carson City Library (1pm; ages 17 and younger; park at the Community Center or at Smith’s Grocery)
  • Live Music with the Zephyrus Brass Quintet in the NAA Gallery at the Brewery Arts Center (3pm-4pm)
  • Suds for Seniors Fundraiser at the Feisty Goat Pub: 1881 E. Long St. (4pm-10am; $15 to sample five beers; benefits the Meals on Wheels program; Tickets also available at the Carson Visitor Center and are good through June 30)
  • Wine Tasting at Genoa Candy and Coffee in Carson Lanes (4pm-8pm; $5 for five tastes)

Get your live music fix tonight. Downtown check out the Lost Mountain Band at Carson Cigar Co. Sassafras is rocking out with an all ages punk show featuring the Damnit Jims, the Shames, and the Hybrid Creeps. A to Zen features Paisley Nightmare in their Zen Den. Dance with Thre3 Guyz Rockin at the Eleventh Frame Lounge inside Carson Lanes.

Are you ready for some football? Maybe you’re just a fan of the commercials. Either way, today is the big game between the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers. Carson City will be hopping with gridiron parties at bars, restaurants, and casinos. Start the day with a pancake breakfast at the Elks Club. For those who aren’t a pigskin fan, consider playing a few rounds of bingo to benefit the Carson Animal Shelter Initiative.

  • Dayton Valley Chili Cook-off and Super Bowl Party at the Dayton Valley Golf Club Bar and Grill (Sampling and Judging begins at 2pm with Super Bowl Party to follow; Tastings $5 or $3 for just one bowl; benefit for the Dayton Food Pantry; Cooking begins at 10am, and contestants should bring their own grill/stoves, tables, pots, pans, spices, ingredients, and any other items needed to prepare their chili)
