I Love Carson City's Weekend Event Summary: August 22-23

Hold on to your hats, Carson City, summer isn’t ready to quit us just yet. An aviation air show at the Minden Airport, the coin show and fair at the Nevada State Museum, and a fishing derby for the kids at Little Washoe Lake are only the tip of the iceberg. The Pavilion at Mills Park is where you’ll find the annual Carson High Football Boosters Fundraising BBQ. The Quicksilver Dog Agility Trials are always fun to watch, and they’ll be at Fuji Park all weekend. Carson Lanes has family fun indoors and out all day long during their Bowling Blast-off. Keep reading for more fun than you can shake a stick at!

SATURDAY: Jazz and Beyond

  • Back to School at Carson Hot Springs (Free 17 and younger admission per paid adult; outdoor pools only; 7am-10pm)
  • Kid’s Carp Fishing Derby at Little Washoe Lake, Washoe Valley (8am-12pm; Admission $7 per vehicle; A limited number of rods are available for kids who do not have their own fishing equipment.   • Quicksilver Agility Club’s Dog Agility Trials at Fuji Park
  • Craft Fair and Kids Carnival at the Stagecoach Bingo and Community Center: 8200 Hwy 50 E, Stagecoach (8am-4pm; free)
  • NAA Exhibit by artist Val Dutter at the Carson Visitor Center (8am-5pm)
  • Coffee and Donuts with EAA Sierra Chapter 403 at 2500 E. College Pkwy (8:30am-12pm, all welcome)
  • Third and Curry Farmers Market; Jazz and Beyond: Live Music with Barbara Baxter (8:30am to1pm)
  • Carson City Mint Coin Show and Fair with Demonstrations of Coin Press #1 at the Nevada State Museum and Carson Nugget (9:30am-4:30pm; $4, under 17 free)
  • Muscle Powered Bike Ride: meet by the Muscle Powered bike rack in front of the Community Pool at 841 N. Roop St. (9:40am-11:40am; must wear helmets and closed toed shoes; riders under 18 must be accompanied by an adult)
  • Aviation Roundup Air Show with the USAF thunderbirds Flight Team and more at the Minden-Tahoe Airport: 1146 Airport Road, Minden (10am-5pm; $15 at gate, $40 family of four or more; bring lawn chair)
  • Bowling Blast-off: Kick Off the 2015/16 Bowling League Season at Carson Lanes (10am-10pm $1 Food Specials and $1 Bowling; outdoor activities with a bounce house and more 10am-6pm)
  • Virginia and Truckee Round-trip Steam Train Ride: leave from Carson City Eastgate Depot on Flint Drive, off U.S. Highway 50 East at 10am and Depart Virginia City Depot at 3pm (tickets limited, $52, seniors and veterans $48, kids 3-16 $32, arrive 30 minutes early)
  • Edwards Motor Car Rides at the Nevada State Train Museum (10am-4pm; $4, $2 kids 11 and under)
  • Arts and Traditions of the American West Series: Dutch Oven Cooking with the Northern Sierra Dutch Oven Group at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park: 1450 Highway 88, Minden (10am; free, bring a chair)

Holy music, Batman! Jazz and Beyond is taking over downtown. Start out at the Third and Curry Farmers Market for soulful singing by the talented Barbara Boxer. Don’t bother moving your car, though. You’ll find Me and Bobby McGee in the Comma Coffee Courtyard at 1:45 p.m. From there, head to the stage on Third Street for Under the Radar. Music will switch venues back and forth until 8 p.m. when the Mic Gillette Band hits the stage. Mic Gillette and his brass band will wow you with original songs and favorites from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Go here for more information on the line-up.

There’s plenty of nightlife beyond Third Street tonight. You’ll want to check out the Mick Clark Blues Band at the Carson Cigar Co. Grab one of their signature espresso martinis while you’re there. Karaoke fans will feel right at home at Westside Pour House, Remedy’s, the Spoke Bar and Grill, or Beercade. Get your groove on with a live DJ at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar and at Living the Good Life. Enjoy some Cowboy Bluegrass at the Brewery Arts Center with Dust in My Coffee.

Planes, trains, and automobiles await! The Nevada State Railroad Museum features rides on the McKeen Motor Car this weekend. Don’t miss out on a trip to Virginia City via the Virginia and Truckee Steam Train: locals get a discount on Sundays when they book online. Ormsby Post Acute Care is hosting a classic car show for their residents, so if you have an automobile that fits the bill, please head on over. The Minden-Tahoe Airport is the home to Aviation Roundup Air Show this weekend. You won’t want to miss the USAF Thunderbird Flight Team. Also on some fierce wheels this Sunday are the Carson Victory Rollers. Our roller derby team is hosting a scrimmage and collecting donations of school supplies at the Community Center.

Today is the last day of Jazz and Beyond, so there is one last chance to spend the afternoon on the Capitol lawn enjoying a picnic and some great music with your friends and family. Don’t miss the Gospel Brunch at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint; it includes a southern style breakfast buffet, mimosas and bloody marys, and a musical performance by the Reno Gospel Ensemble. It’s a day for drums at the Brewery Arts Center. The Drum Summit will have performances by Liz Broscoe and Reno Taiko.
