A 19-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after a chase through a field near Highway 50 and Fairview Drive.

Hector Cervantes is being held in Carson City Jail without bail on a parole violation charge and $10,428 bail for other charges.

According to the arrest report, Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies responded at 12:31 a.m. to the 2800 block of Century Drive where there had been several people outside a home yelling and screaming. It turned out to be a large house party where several underage people were drinking.

Deputies observed a vehicle speed away from the residence, swerving through traffic. The vehicle was going southbound and pulled into a driveway where the driver exited and took off running through a yard. Another person remained in the vehicle. Cervantes was detained in the field and brought back to the patrol car where he had "an overwhelming odor of alcohol" type beverage coming from his breath, the arrest report states. He agreed to participate in standardized field sobriety tests at the sheriff's office.

The man, who was vomiting and urinated his clothing by the time he arrived at the sheriff's office was again asked if he wanted to participate in field sobriety tests. He said he did. After her was done vomiting the officer asked if he would attempt the tests. He was not able to stand without being supported by a deputy, according to the arrest report. He elected, instead, to do a breath test.

He was taken to Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center for clearance. Prior to being taken to the hospital he was asked if he would consent to a blood draw to determine his blood alcohol content. He agreed and a sample was taken at the hospital.

He was booked into jail at around 2:59 a.m. During the intake search two clear plastic baggies were located that contained marijuana and a white powder. The man said that it was cocaine, according to the arrest report.

Cervantes was arrested on the following felony charges: possession of a controlled substance, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana under the age of 21, and parole violation. Misdemeanor charges are: DUI, reckless driving with wanton disregard, minor consuming, obstructing and violation of alternative sentencing conditions.

In other arrests:

— A Pollock Pines, Calif., couple were jailed Sunday on felony and misdemeanor charges. Abram Louis Sassenberg, 33, and Lisa Noel Cooney, 32, were arrested at 11:17 a.m. at the intersection of Roop and Mallory.

According to the arrest report, officers observed a GMC Blazer with a suspended registration while on patrol in the area of South Carson Street and Fairview. The officer stopped the vehicle and asked the man for a license which he said he didn't have it with him and stated he didn't have any identification with him.

The man told the officer his name was Benjamin. When asked for his Social Security number the man said he didn't know it. When the name was run through dispatch it came back that the person had a misdemeanor warrant for his arrest in Wells, Nev.

The man was told to get out of the vehicle. When Sassenberg was asked what was going on, the officer said that the person's information he proved had a warrant for his arrest. The deputy then asked about the man's real identify in which he gave to the officer. The identity came back with Sassenberg being wanted as a fugitive from justice in Placer County, Calif. He also did not have a valid driver's license, the arrest report states.

During a search of the vehicle officers found several items of drugs and paraphernalia, including a glass vial in the glove box with methamphetamine in it, as well as a baggie with meth and a digital scale.

Because the meth was found in the area closest to Cooney, she was arrested. When she arrived at jail she admitted that she had a glass meth pipe concealed in her bra, the arrest report states.

Sassenberg was arrested without bail based on the fugitive from justice charge. He also faces a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, suspended registration and driving without a valid license.

Cooney faces a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail: $3,637.

— A 32-year-old Carson City man was arrested Friday, March 21, 5:15 p.m. in the area of Village and Pheasant. Mark Lobretto faces a felony charge of heroin possession and three misdemeanor charges.

According to the arrest report, Sgt. Brian Humphrey with the Carson City Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team was patrolling the area on an operation when he observed a man walking around in a well-known drug transaction area. He asked Lobretto if he could speak with him, explaining that he was not under arrest and that he was looking for a subject in the area.

Lobretto instead looked at the officer and stated on his own that he had an outstanding warrant for his arrested and provided Humphrey with his information, the arrest report states. It was confirmed that the man had two outstanding warrants, the first for petit larceny issued out of Eastfork Township with a $640 cash only bail amount. The second was out of Carson City Justice Court for contempt of court, with a bail amount of $494.

The officer took the man into custody. During the search he located a small piece of wax paper with a small amount of heroin on it, a spoon with heroin residue on it and cotton with residue on it. Bail: $4,771.

— A 27-year-old Carson City man was arrested March 21, 8:47 p.m. in the area of Long and Nevada streets. Derek John Melino faces a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the arrest report the man was stopped for erratic driving. The man appeared overly nervous and shaky when the deputy spoke with him. He was asked if he had anything in the vehicle that he wasn't supposed to have. The man said he had a marijuana pipe and a very small amount of marijuana, arrest report states.

The man exited the vehicle and the officer asked where the items were and the man said in the glove box. The officer asked if he could get the items and the man said the officer could, the arrest report states.

The deputy opened the glove box and found a black zippered case in which there was a hypodermic needle. The officer asked the man if the needle would test positive for methamphetamine and the man said it would. Also in the case was glass marijuana pipe, a marijuana grinder and a small metal container where a second hypodermic device and a spoon was found. Both were tested positive for meth. Bail: $4,374.

— A 20-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday, 12:24 a.m. on suspicion of felony drug possession. Arron Juan Hernandez, also faces two misdemeanor charges: violation of a suspended sentence and contempt of court. The arrest was made in the 1800 block of East Long Street.

According to the arrest report, deputies responded to the area for a dispute between a father and son. When the officer arrived he found the father standing in front of the address. He said his son came home and was trying to fight him.

Officer searched the area where neighbors said they saw a man jumping fences. The officer then saw the man walking toward him. The officer told the man not to run, but he did anyway, with his hands reaching at his pockets, the arrest report states.

The officer told the man to stop and show him his hands and the man did not.

Hernandez then entered a parking lot area in the 1800 block of East Long and ran directly in front of the officer. The man put his hands up and sat down on the ground. He was arrested. Officers searched him and found three lithium pills in one of his back pockets. Bail: $6,000.

A Carson City man was arrested Saturday evening on suspicion of felony domestic battery with strangulation and resisting officers, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.

Edward Dale Chaney, 26, was arrested at 8:49 p.m. at a residence on East Roland Street where he and the victim were staying. According to the arrest report, deputies received a call from the suspect's father stating his son and girlfriend were arguing and he was fearful that the situation would escalate.

Upon arriving at the residence, deputies repeatedly attempted to contact the reporting witness, knocking on the door and calling on the phone. Unable to verify the welfare of the caller or the victim, deputies began a search of the outside of the property until they located a set of keys in the snow.

Using the keys to gain access to the garage, deputies found the victim in what appeared to be a living area furnished with a bed and a space heater. She had injuries to her head, neck and shoulders, the arrest report states.

When the victim attempted to stop Chaney, he allegedly pinned her to a bed and began to punch and choke her. Then began to inhale Dust-off, according to the arrest report. The father intervened and they left the property, returning a short time later where the suspect was arrested.

A brief car chase through Carson City ended with the vehicle crashed and a woman, wanted on multiple warrants, arrested. The crash happened Wednesday in the area of Northridge and Roop streets in Carson City. The suspect, Laurie Ann Hancock, 43, had four felony warrants for her arrest, confirmed Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

The chase happened shortly before 5:30 p.m. Hancock's record shows four outstanding felony warrants, two of which were no bail warrants, Furlong said. The bail warrants were for $10,000 and $20,000. She was taken to Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare, complaining of abdominal pain. In the vehicle officers found a bottle of Wild Turkey and a meth pipe, Furlong said.

A Carson City patrol officer had attempted to pull Hancock over on a failure to yield. Hancock then began blowing stop signs, speeding up along with way, with speeds reaching around 75 mph, according to police dispatch.

A water pipeline was damaged in the area as well as a grave stone in the cemetery where the chase had started, according to authorities at the scene. Witnesses said the vehicle, a VW Beetle, suffered minimal damage.

Hancock, who had been wanted on suspicion of multiple crimes, including drug and embezzlement charges, has altered her looks while being on the lamb, going from blonde to jet black hair over the course of her history of recent arrests.

Mother bear, three cubs captured in Carson City released by Nevada wildlife agency

A black bear sow and her three male cubs were captured this week on the west side of Carson City by the Nevada Department of Wildlife. The four bears were safely released back in to the wild Friday morning in the Ash Canyon area west of Nevada’s capital city.

The bears were on the verge of becoming “conflict” bears before the capture. “They had been raiding garbage cans and searching for fallen fruit from trees,” said NDOW biologist Carl Lackey. “NDOW’s new family trap, which has multiple trap chambers, was used in the capture.”

The sow was tranquilized outside the trap and placed in a secure chamber of the trap while the cubs remained up a tall tree. The three cubs eventually came down the tree and were caught in the second chamber.

“That is how we were able to reunite the sow with her cubs,” said Lackey.

The release took place on early Friday morning in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada in Ash Canyon. Because cubs were involved a “soft release” technique was used. “During a soft release, we do not chase the bears with Karelian bear dogs because of the danger of separating the sow and the cubs,” said Lackey.

Nevada’s black bears normally begin hibernation between Thanksgiving and Christmas but can delay their sleeping plans if weather remains moderate and food is still available to the bears.

A 30-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday and faces a felony charge of unlawful use of a credit card.
Jack Michael Bell is being held on $7,500 bond in the Carson City Jail. According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatched to the 200 block of Fairview Drive in reference to a fraud report.

The victim advised she discovered that her Chase Bank debit card was missing two days ago and she said she suspected her roommate and boyfriend, Jack Michael Bell, took her debit card, the arrest report states.

The victim was notified by her bank that $180 had been taken from the "Cardtronics" ATM machine located inside CVS Pharmacy in the 2000 block of Fairview Drive on June 29. The victim went to the store and spoke to the manager about the incident. The victim told officers the manager recalled dealing with Bell because he was angry after he tried to return an item he purchased, the arrest report states.

The manager also advised the victim she located a discarded ATM receipt left behind by Bell, according to the arrest report. The receipt matched the last four numbers to the victim's debit card. The victim said the manager located video footage of Bell using her card at the ATM, the arrest report states.

Officers spoke with the store manager who advised she recalled the incident with Bell the previous day because he was angry the "Google Play" card he purchased wasn't working. The manager said Bell was upset about having to return the item and the process involved, the arrest report states.

The manager showed the officer security video of Bell using the Cardtronics ATM between 3:20 p.m. to 3:25 p.m. The time stamp on the recovered ATM receipt was 3:21 p.m. The manager advised she would have to get clearance from her supervisor to release the tape. She advised she would notify the sheriff's office.

Officers then made contact with Bell at his work and requested to meet with him at the Sheriff's Office to speak about the incident, the arrest report states. Bell told the officer on the phone that the victim was lying and she allowed him to use the debit card on her behalf, the arrest report states.

The officer advised Bell that the two could speak about it more in depth when they met in person. The arresting officer then again spoke to the victim who had advised she had text messages between her and Bell indicating he was lying to her about taking her debit card. The officer viewed the messages which showed the victim questioning Bell about taking her debit card. In the messages, Bell denied any involvement in taking or using the card. The victim forwarded the messages to the officer, the arrest report states.

At around 5 p.m. officers met with Bell at the Carson City Sheriff's Office where he was read his Miranda rights and was advised of the circumstances being investigated and that he was a possible suspect.

Bell was cooperative and agreed to speak about the incident. He started off by saying the victim was lying and had a history of causing problems. Bell was advised the issue was the card and the matter at hand, the arrest report states.

He told the officer that the victim gave him the card to use and asked him to take out $180 cash for her. He said he gave her the money and said she had forgotten to ask him for the card back, the arrest report states.

He was asked why, on the recent text message to the victim, did he deny using the card or knowing where it was. Bell told the officer that in the middle of sending the text message they spoke over the phone.

The officer advised Bell that his story didn't match and pointed to the timeline of the messages which indicated after they had this alleged conversation where he confessed to having the card, he still continued to deny to her he had no knowledge of where the card was or that he had used it. Bell was insistent that the victim was lying to police.

He was taken into custody. During inventory of Bell's wallet the officer asked if the victim's debit card was inside. Bell said it was. He offered to pay the victim the money she was out, the arrest report states. The officer advised that he should follow up with his attorney with any issues about the case. He was booked without incident.

One was a felony warrant, being in possession of a stolen motor vehicle, issued May 2, 2013 out of Carson City Justice Court. Attorney General Urges Nevadans To Apply For Free Foreclosure Review By New Sept. 30 Deadline

CARSON CITY – The deadline for a free, federal independent foreclosure review for Nevadans whose homes were in foreclosure in 2009 or 2010 has been extended to Sept. 30, 2012, Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto said today.

The previous deadline was July 31.

Ordered by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, the independent foreclosure review will determine whether individuals suffered financial injury and should receive compensation or other remedy because of errors or other problems which occurred during the foreclosure process.

“Do not wait until the extended Sept. 30 deadline to submit your application for a free and independent foreclosure review,” Masto said.

According to the OCC’s recent report, as of May 31, 108,687 Nevadans who are eligible for the review received a mailing and 4,267 Nevadans submitted requests for review.

Information about Independent Foreclosure Review may appear in this format in advertisements and postcard notices that eligible borrowers recently received by mail.

More information, including edibility and online applications is available at www.independentforeclosurereview.com or 888-952-9105 (between 8 am and 10 pm (Eastern), Monday through Friday, and between 8 am and 5 pm Saturday). All requests for Review Forms must be submitted online or postmarked no later than September 30, 2012. Not every finding will result in compensation or other remedy.

In first announcing the program on May 31, Masto said: “I encourage Nevadans hurt by foreclosure errors and who are eligible, to apply for a free review before the July 31 (now Sept. 30) deadline. In doing so, beware of anyone who asks you to pay a fee for any foreclosure review service and immediately report those persons or companies to my office.”

To be eligible, the foreclosure process must have been active between Jan. 1, 2009 and Dec. 31, 2010. The property securing the loan must have been a primary residence, and the mortgage must have been serviced by: America’s Servicing Co., Aurora Loan Services, BAC Home Loans Servicing, Bank of America, Beneficial, Chase, Citibank, CitiFinancial, CitiMortgage, Countrywide, EMC, EverBank/EverHome Mortgage Company, Financial Freedom, GMAC Mortgage, HFC, HSBC, IndyMac Mortgage Services, MetLife Bank, National City Mortgage, PNC Mortgage, Sovereign Bank, SunTrust Mortgage, U.S. Bank, Wachovia, Washington Mutual, Wells Fargo, or Wilshire Credit Corporation.

More than 4.3 million forms and letters explaining the process were sent to eligible homeowners in 2011. Nevada residents who received a letter should be aware it is a legitimate program.

Anyone who wants to report an independent foreclosure review scam can contact the Attorney General’s Bureau of Consumer Protection Hotline at 702-486-3132 or visit http://bit.ly/NVAGComplaintForms.

Bryce Harper looking for a lesson in 'Humble 101'

First, it was saluting his opponent’s dugout as he circled third base after hitting a home run last year in a CSN uniform early in the season. Then, it was tossing his bat up 10 feet in the air as he hit a lazy fly-ball in the post-season tournament later in that season. Now, he's blowing kisses to the pitcher as he crosses home plate after a home run. My question is: When will the overpaid #1 draft pick of 2010 learn to just play the game?

He signed for just under $10 million and he has been excelling in Hagerstown, which is the Class A affiliate for the Washington Nationals organization. After his latest mistake which common sense should have told him that it was dumb for him to even think about doing it; he will likely know what it's like to be hit by a 90+ MPH pitch somewhere on his body (if he hasn't experienced that already). The 18 year old is showing his age and immaturity. The Washington Nationals will need to police him, and quickly, before their $9.9 million dollar investment becomes more of a liability.

Harper also might want to think about his childish antics before he does them because it could hinder his ability of moving up to the majors as quickly as he would like. The Nationals will not bring up someone who acts like they should still be in high school.

We all know Harper (and his parents) decided to forego his final two years in high school to chase the money. Everybody knows that was an investment move, but here's a thought: How about playing the game for the game and not the money?

Harper, you have the talent, use it wisely. If you sign a professional contract, the first word you should get to know: Responsibility.

Flooding forces closure of Carson City early childhood Aberasturi Center

UPDATE: Carson City School District’s Aberasturi Center, a support services, early childhood program adjacent to Bordewich Bray, has flooded and school is closed today.

School staff discovered the massive water leak at around 7 a.m. this morning, said Carson City School District Superintendent Richard Stokes. More than two inches of water flooded the entire building.

It is undetermined when classes will resume. Carson City Early Childhood Center at 710 West Fourth Street, is a preschool that serves children ages 3-5. Carson City Early Childhood Center is Independent and has a capacity of 90 children. The center offers instructional programs in reading and math.

The district's operation department has hired an emergency team that goes in to help with flooding and cleanup, which is underway now.

"Part of the goal for us is to get the place dried up so we can chase down where the leak is," said Stokes. He said it is suspected to be part of an old boiler system but that still hasn't been determined.

As far as classes, Stokes said the district is weighing its options and working on alternative plans.

"I would encourage parents to be alert to the fact that we will be notifying them about what the next steps are in getting their children to school and ask that they be patient," said Stokes.

Classrooms, staff rooms, offices are flooded, with water damage seeping into carpets, papers, and equipment close to the ground. A damage estimate is unknown at this time.

Carson City Demonstrators to President Obama: Fire Ed DeMarco and Help Millions of Homeowners

Event at Obama for America Campaign Office, March 15, at the Carson City Democratic Central Committee Headquarters
at 502 E. John Street (& Roop St.) behind Bank of America

On Thursday at Noon, Occupy Carson City demonstrators, MoveOn.org members and homeowners in crisis will rally at the local Obama for America (OFA) office in Carson City, NV to demand that government-controlled mortgage lenders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac provide relief to ten million underwater homeowners by adjusting their mortgages to reflect the true value of their home.

The March 15 event is part of a MoveOn.org national day of action called “Save Our Homes,” which includes more than 200 actions around the country. It is being held on the same day as the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs meets in Washington, D.C., to discuss the fate of homeowners. Events are taking place across the country at OFA campaign offices, at the biggest banks, and in front of homes facing foreclosure.

Participants will call on President Obama to stand strong with the 99% and replace the acting director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, Ed DeMarco, appointed by George W. Bush, who oversees Fannie and Freddie and refuses to support homeowners. President Obama can replace DeMarco and make sure Fannie and Freddie, which hold 60% of all mortgages, provide relief to the millions of Americans struggling with mortgage debt. Such an action would help all homeowners by helping to stabilize home prices and the economy in general.

Participants will also demand that banks such as Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Chase be more strongly forced by the government to help homeowners stay in their homes through immediate and widespread home loan modification and principal reduction. Homeowner John Kinney who will attend the event explained, "I am only one person among thousands in the state of Nevada who has been forced to give up my house. The same thing is going on throughout this country. The banks do not care!"
Reno homeowners Donna and Nuno Vieira also worked tirelessly with Wells Fargo to no avail to keep their home which also had real estate appraisal and loan origination mistakes that caused them to be $243,000 underwater after closing. Wells Fargo decided to foreclose instead, but the Vieiras made many sacrifices to fight back and they now have a Nevada Supreme Court Case (#53690).

According to a March 1 report by CoreLogic, an information and research company serving government and business clients, Nevada has the highest percentage of negative home equity ("homes underwater") in the country at 61% as of Quarter 4, 2011 data. With regard to the 11.1 million homes underwater across the entire country worth a total amount of $2.8 trillion in Quarter 4, 2011, Mark Fleming, CoreLogic's chief economist said, "The high level of negative equity and the inability to pay is the ‘double trigger’ of default, and the reason we have such a significant foreclosure pipeline.”

Janette Dean of Carson City explained that she helped organize the event because "It's crucial that we stand up and fight for homeowners right now before even more are forced out of their homes. Banks got bailouts and huge corporations continue to get tax breaks and subsidies, but American citizens are being thrown out on the streets. It's unconscionable. Meanwhile, the financial companies who contributed greatly to the recession in the first place now get to reap the rewards by taking their pickings of properties for cents on the dollar." She added, "And it's completely unfair when some people want to blame foreclosure victims for buying homes they could not afford. Most homeowners would still be paying their mortgages if the job losses and small business losses of the recession hadn't been so catastrophic."

The event will take place on Thursday, March 15, from 12:00-2:00pm at the OFA office which is the Carson City Democratic Committee Office at 502 E. John Street (between Stewart & Roop Streets) behind Bank of America in Carson City, NV. All are encouraged to attend. UPDATE: An arraignment hearing for Jordan Burkhart and Robert “Robbie” Michael Hernandez, accused of robbing an elderly man and a caretaker at gunpoint over Memorial Day weekend, has been rescheduled for Tuesday, 9 a.m.

***
Two men who allegedly broke into the home of an elderly World War II veteran and held his caregiver at gunpoint over Memorial Day weekend will be in a Carson City courtroom Monday.

Jordan Burkhart, 24, of Wellington and Robert “Robbie” Michael Hernandez, 27, of Carson City are accused of breaking into a Canvasback Drive home at around 5 a.m. Sunday, May 26, 2014. The pair allegedly forced their way in by kicking and prying at the door, where they robbed James Sorrentino and a caretaker at gunpoint.

Sorrentino is a 100-year-old Army Air Corp and U.S. Air Force veteran with an in-residence female care taker.

One of the men allegedly held a gun to the head of the caregiver during the robbery and said they were looking for a safe. Both suspects fled the area in a sedan. Neither victim required medical treatment. Approximately $30, along with miscellaneous property was taken.

Both men were arrested May 28. Burkhart was arrested at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office without incident. Hernandez was found and arrested while driving his own vehicle in Sparks.

Hernandez attempted to flee through residential areas, but was taken into custody by Sparks Police officers after a short vehicle pursuit followed by a foot chase.

The men will be in Carson City District Court for arraignment. Each face various felony charges of home invasion and robbery, and robbery with a deadly weapon against a person over the age of 60.
